Kicking in Rugby

Kicking is a useful rugby skill to develop because kicking is used to start the game, restart the game after a try, score conversions/penalty kicks, and to relieve pressure or gain offense.

There are 3 main types of kicks in Rugby:

Drop kick - Used for kickoffs and scoring conversions through the goal posts. The ball must hit the ground before kicking it.

Punt - Used during the flow of play to relieve pressure or to move the play down the field. The ball does not have to hit the ground before being kicked.

Grubber - A type of kick where the ball bounces low along the ground. Used for kickoffs and throughout continuous play to break defensive lines and for short chases.
