Set Piece: Lineouts

A lineout is a method of restarting play when the ball goes out of bounds over the sideline. It involves players from both teams forming lines perpendicular to the sidelines, and the ball gets thrown in between them to compete for possession.

How to set up a lineout:

Teams form parallel lines with a 1 meter separation between teams (this is called the channel).

The hooker stands on the sideline and throws the ball overhead, straight down the middle of the channel.

There are many different strategies for lineouts, but the most common is for each team to lift a player high in the air to catch the ball. (see the video below)

Here are some general rules of lineouts:

A minimum of 2 players per team are required in a lineout, and both teams have to have an equal number of players.

The team throwing the ball in decides the timing of the jump, and the opponents have to time their own lift correctly to have a chance at competing for the ball mid air

The channel must stay open, and players can not step into the channel until after the ball is thrown in and caught.
